The Young Guru Academy (YGA), an Istanbul-based non-governmental organization (NGO) devoted to developing a Ünique brand of imaginative business leaders, held its third annual Young Guru Academy (YGA-3) program in North Carolina on March 16-21.

YGA-3 was hosted by the local Turkish-American commÜnities of the Triangle and Wilmington areas, with financial sponsorship provided by major multinational companies of Turkey. Participants were a group of promising Turkish University students with the potential of becoming the future leaders and visionaries of Turkey.

Since the YGA program emphasizes social responsibility and public service, visiting participants extend helping hands to the Food Bank of North Carolina. In addition to their commÜnity-minded activity, the YGA-3 participants toured local Üniversities (DUKE, UNC and NCSU) and visited the International Visitors Council/World Affairs Council (IVC/WAC) for a panel discussion on local NGO's. The IVC/WAC is an independent, non-partisan and non-profit organization that promotes understanding of world affairs, citizen-to-citizen diplomacy, and the recognition of North Carolina as an international center of education, culture and business.

The members of the Academy also went to North Carolina's beautiful coastline for a four-day retreat and leadership conference at Wilmington's Figure Eight Island. Leadership speakers from Turkey were flown in for an intense crash course on such topics as Inspiring Leadership, Unleashing the Potential Within, Managing Diversity, Insightful Innovations for Social Development and Self Knowledge. In addition to these lecture topics, the YGA participants attended workshops on future trends and conceptualized social responsibility projects for the Istanbul Greater City MÜnicipality. A collaborative marketing proposal for Pepsi/Turkey was also developed, encouraging the Turkish youth to embrace more social responsibilities. At the conclusion of the Academy, this proposal was reviewed by the managing director of Pepsi/Turkey and approved as a social development program to be jointly implemented with Istanbul Greater City MÜnicipality.

At the conclusion of the Academy, Burcin Yalcinkaya, a jÜnior at Koc University, said, "This was an exhausting program, but I am very fortunate to have been part of this 'once in a life time' opportÜnity. Meeting the colorful speakers and my peer participants in this very Ünique setting changed my perspective about what I would like to accomplish in life."

Annual YGA programs include cross-cultural outreach projects and leadership enrichment workshops. Participation in the all expenses paid Academy is highly competitive and involves a rigorous selection process.

NC: 2006 Young Guru Academy Conference

Young Turkish leaders attend leadership conference in Figure Eight Island

The Young Guru Academy (YGA), an Istanbul and North Carolina based non-governmental organization (NGO) devoted to developing socially responsible leaders of the future, held its annual Young Guru Academy (YGA-2006) program in North Carolina on September 12-18.

YGA-2006 was hosted by the local Turkish-American communities of the Triangle and Wilmington areas, with financial sponsorship provided by major multinational companies of Turkey. Participants were a group of promising Turkish University students with the potential of becoming the future leaders and visionaries of Turkey.

YGA programs emphasize social responsibility and civic engagement through cultural exchanges. Visiting YGA participants toured and volunteered their time at the Food Bank of North Carolina. In addition to their community-minded activity, the YGA-2006 participants also toured local universities (DUKE, UNC and NCSU) and held a meeting with the Center for International Understandings (CIU) to review an innovative K-12 global education movement called "North Carolina in the World," coordinated by the center at the request of the Governor's Office. The goal of this cross-cultural program is to increase student knowledge and skills about the world so that all graduates thrive in the global economy. Hundreds of North Carolina education, policy and business leaders are part of this collaborative effort to infuse international content in all subjects, at all levels.

Members of the Academy also jointly held a workshop with the American-Turkish Association of North Carolina (ATA-NC) titled "Read, Think and Share." Objective of this program is to introduce children to classic children's books published in Turkish, promoting bilingual reading and conversational skills, while using YGA fellows as reading buddies and facilitators.

The second half of the leadership conference continued with a four-day retreat at Wilmington's Figure Eight Island. With North Carolina's beautiful coastline providing an inspiring backdrop, intense seminars on such topics as Inspiring Leadership, Unleashing the Potential Within, Managing Diversity, Insightful Innovations for Social Development and Self Knowledge were given. A smaller group of YGA participants also toured the EUE/Screen Gems Studios in Wilmington which is the largest full service motion picture facility in the United States east of California.

This year's conference workshop focused on projects that will promote the city of Istanbul as the Cultural Capital of Europe in the year 2010. Two proposals were developed by the YGA fellows, encouraging world youth groups to embrace social responsibilities by serving as Cultural Ambassadors for Istanbul, "Most Inspiring City" in the world, and a melting pot of people where the East meets the West.

At the conclusion of the Academy, Ceyda Gunaslan, a senior at Bosphorus University, said, "I am very fortunate to have been part of this enrichment program. Coming to the United States, being part of this cultural exchange and meeting other YGA fellows like myself in this very unique setting inspires me to take responsibility for a better future, our future."

Annual YGA programs include cross-cultural outreach projects and leadership enrichment workshops. Participation in the all expenses paid Academy is highly competitive and involves a rigorous selection process.
